Topanga is a bohemian canyon community in the Santa Monica Mountains between Malibu and the San Fernando Valley, wrapped around Topanga State Park. It has long been an enclave of artists, yogis, and holistic, back-to-nature living.
Topanga Canyon Boulevard can close for days after a slide, which keeps the canyon feeling further from the city than the map suggests. Reiki is given at a distance, so a closed road never postpones a session. Blends and sprays go out from Michigan by mail, to whatever address works best.
The Tongva name is Topaa'nga, given as where the mountain meets the sea or as a place above, with the root probably older still and Chumashan. The canyon drew artists through the 1960s, among them Wallace Berman, who settled in 1965, and Neil Young, who recorded in a basement studio here. Topanga State Park is the largest park in the Santa Monica Mountains and one of the largest open space preserves anywhere surrounded by a city. The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum was founded in 1973 and the Geer family has run it since, staging Shakespeare outdoors under the trees.
