Carbondale is the home of Southern Illinois University and a gateway to the Shawnee National Forest and Giant City State Park. A college town surrounded by forested hills and famous for its eclipse skies naturally leans toward mindful, holistic living.
The City of New Orleans calls at the Carbondale depot twice a day, one train north to Chicago and one south, on rails the Illinois Central laid before the town had much else. Not everything has to travel that far. Sessions are held remotely, and attunement files arrive digitally and stay yours for good.
This land changed hands in August 1853, to Daniel Harmon Brush, Dr. William Richart and John Asgill Conner. The first train pulled in northbound out of Cairo on Independence Day 1854. Woodlawn Cemetery hosted a formal Memorial Day observance on April 29, 1866, ranking it among the earliest anywhere once the Civil War ended. General John A. Logan, who made his home here, delivered the address that day, and he went on to establish the observance nationally. The school that opened in 1874 as Southern Illinois Normal University has gone by Southern Illinois University since 1947. A total solar eclipse crossed the town on August 21, 2017, and a second followed seven years later on April 8, 2024.
