Scarborough holds Maine's largest salt marsh along with Higgins Beach and Prouts Neck, where Winslow Homer once painted. Life among tidal creeks, dunes, and wide sky naturally invites the kind of slow, grounded rhythm that supports everyday calm.
New neighborhoods fill in along the Route 1 corridor a little more each year, and the old racetrack grounds are turning into a village of their own. A practice that needs no address suits a town still deciding its shape. Sessions happen at a distance, and the sprays and essences that go with them arrive by post from Michigan.
The Massachusetts General Court incorporated the settlements here as Scarborough on July 14, 1658, after Scarborough in Yorkshire. The Scarborough Marsh spreads across the middle of the town, salt water and grass rather than solid ground. Prouts Neck runs out into the Gulf of Maine, and Winslow Homer, who painted the sea harder than almost anyone, lived and worked out there until his death in 1910. Scarborough Downs is the other landmark, at the opposite end of the town's character.
