Gaithersburg is one of Maryland's most multicultural cities, and its many immigrant communities carry rich folk-herbalism and food-as-wellness traditions from around the world.
Households near the Kentlands and Old Town speak dozens of languages, and remedies here often come from a grandmother rather than a shelf. Flower essences made in Michigan and sent by mail sit comfortably beside those traditions, offered as a complement and never a replacement for medical care.
The place was settled in 1765 as a farming crossroads called Log Town, and was incorporated as the Town of Gaithersburg on April 5, 1878. In 1899 it was picked as one of six sites worldwide for an International Latitude Observatory, measuring the wobble of the Earth's axis, and that little building is the only National Historic Landmark in the city; it ran until 1982, when computers made the manual readings unnecessary. The National Institute of Standards and Technology sits just west of Interstate 270 with a Gaithersburg address, though the campus is technically in unincorporated county land. A town that measured the planet's wobble for eighty years is entitled to be particular about numbers.
