Set among red rock mesas along historic Route 66 near the Navajo Nation and Zuni Pueblo, Gallup is known as the Heart of Indian Country, a trading and arts hub where Native American and Hispanic cultures meet across its many galleries and trading posts.
Out here, services can sit an hour of highway apart, and winter puts snow across the mesas without much warning. Road conditions have no bearing on a session given at a distance. A package leaves Michigan carrying your blend and reaches you the way any other mail does.
The name is an accident of payroll. David L. Gallup was the paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, the only large employer around when the town was founded in 1881 on the southern transcontinental route, and men working the line said they were going to Gallup to get paid. Route 66 came through in 1926 and filled Main Street with motels, service stations and dozens of trading posts. The El Rancho Hotel opened December 17, 1937, built by the brother of the film producer D.W. Griffith, and put up Hollywood crews for years. The Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial is held each August at Red Rock Park, nine miles east.
