Set on the high-desert mesas just north of Albuquerque at roughly 5,290 feet, Rio Rancho pairs wide-open skies and abundant sunshine with an extensive park system of more than 50 parks, giving this fast-growing Sandoval County community an active, outdoor-minded rhythm that already leans toward natural living.
Shift work at the chip plant and the daily run down 528 into Albuquerque shape a great many schedules on this side of the river. No waiting room and no drive figure into a distance session. Because the attunement files are yours permanently, they can be picked up again on a quiet evening weeks later.
This is a city that was sold before it was built. AMREP, founded in 1961 by New York advertising and real estate men, bought 55,000 acres north of Albuquerque and subdivided it, selling more than 75,000 lots by 1977 to buyers in other parts of the country who had mostly never seen the ground. By 1970 about a thousand people actually lived on it. The place incorporated as a city in 1981, the same period Intel established its site here, and the plant went on to become one of the company's largest and the first anywhere to make six-inch wafers. Almost everything here postdates the moon landing.
