Hurricane season opens in June, and film crews near the Cape Fear Riverwalk keep hours that shift from one week to the next. Wilmington grew as a colonial port on the Cape Fear River where it runs to the Atlantic, and it still works as one, with private terminals and the state Ports Authority's Port of Wilmington. The battleship USS North Carolina is moored across from the downtown waterfront as a memorial and is open to visitors. Since Cinespace opened here in 1984 the city has held the largest television and film production facility in the country outside California, with Dream Stage 10 the third largest sound stage in the United States and the largest special-effects water tank in North America.
