For years this was Powell's Valley, or simply Campground, after the Methodist camp meeting ground where people gathered to hear circuit riders preach. In 1884 a local merchant got a post office and named it for Walter Quintin Gresham, the United States Postmaster General, who never once came here. Through a clerical error the settlement was granted two post offices that same year, one called Campground and one called Gresham; when the Postal Service caught the mistake it revoked Campground, and the name that stuck was the one belonging to a man who had never seen the place.
