Hood River overlooks the Columbia River Gorge beneath snow-capped Mount Hood, famous for windsurfing, orchard-lined Fruit Loop farms, and craft breweries. This outdoors-loving town already lives close to wind, water, and mountain, a natural fit for holistic wellness.
East winds funnel down the Gorge all winter, glazing roads with ice for days at a stretch and rearranging plans without warning. A session held at a distance never depends on the highway staying open. Attunement materials arrive digitally and remain yours permanently, which matters when weather decides the week.
The town was settled in 1854 and platted in 1881, named for the river, which was named for a British admiral. Orchards went in across the valley through the 1890s and the first carload of apples shipped east in 1900 helped start the Pacific Northwest fruit business. A freeze in 1919 killed most of the apple trees, growers replanted in hardier pears, and this county now leads the world in Anjou production. The Mount Hood Railroad was built in 1906 and the Columbia River Highway reached here in 1922. In the early 1980s windsurfers from Seattle found the wind that funnels through the gorge, and by 1986 a race finishing in town paid the winner thirty thousand dollars.
