Everything here follows from the confluence. The Allegheny and the Monongahela meet to form the Ohio at the wedge of land called the Point, now Point State Park, and General John Forbes built Fort Pitt there in 1758 and named it for William Pitt. The rivers and the ravines between them are why the city carries 446 bridges, more than anywhere else, and why two nineteenth-century inclines, the Duquesne and the Monongahela, still climb the south slope because the hill is too steep to walk. The steel that defined the place gave way after the early 1980s, and since the 1990s the city has run on hospitals, universities and technology instead.
