About 52,000 people share a city held between Puget Sound on the west and Sea-Tac Airport immediately east. That closeness shapes the days here, with jet noise overhead and saltwater air moving through the same neighborhoods. Burien answers with walkable blocks in Olde Burien and an international food scene that keeps widening.
Daily life in Burien runs between the walkable Olde Burien blocks and the saltwater parks along the Sound, often on foot. Mail fits that rhythm, since a small package waits at the door while you finish work or a shoreline walk. A scheduled attunement suits households living under the flight path.
Settlement here began in the 1860s, and the place took the name of Gottlieb Burian, a German immigrant who arrived early. For a while it answered to Sunnydale, a name that still surfaces when longtime residents talk about the old days. Then came more than a century as an unincorporated community, close enough to Seattle to be shaped by it without any say of its own. In 1993 residents voted to become a city, largely to gain a stronger voice as Sea-Tac Airport pressed to expand nearby. That history still shows in how Burien holds its ground, with Olde Burien kept walkable and the saltwater parks left open to everyone.
