Captain Gilbert Knapp, from Chatham in Massachusetts, founded a settlement he called Port Gilbert in 1834 where the Root River reaches Lake Michigan, and it was incorporated as the village of Racine in 1841, racine being French for root. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the S.C. Johnson and Son headquarters here in 1936, and Wingspread, and several houses around the city. Racine has the largest Danish population in North America. The kringle that goes with that is the pastry the city is best known for outside Wisconsin.
