Wisconsin Dells is named for the sandstone gorges the Wisconsin River carved through soft rock, framed by pine bluffs and scenic boat tours. Beyond its lively tourism, the surrounding river landscape offers quiet trails and water views that lend themselves to a calmer, mindful pace.
Witches Gulch narrows to a slot of wet sandstone upriver, and nobody walks it once the tour boats stop for the year. Seasonal work here shifts household schedules week to week, and a session that needs no travel can move with them. Essences and aura sprays are mixed in Michigan and posted, so they simply wait for you at home.
The town was laid out as Kilbourn City in 1856, for Byron Kilbourn of Milwaukee, and only took the name Wisconsin Dells in 1931 to tie itself to the gorge it sits beside. The photographer H. H. Bennett bought a studio here in 1865 and his stereoscopic views of the sandstone formations went all over the country, which is most of the reason anybody outside Wisconsin had heard of the place. The Dells themselves are a narrow sandstone gorge on the Wisconsin River. The water parks that now dominate the town came with an expansion beginning in the late 1970s.
