Glencoe is home to the Chicago Botanic Garden, hundreds of acres of gardens, prairie, and water set against Lake Michigan. Living beside such carefully tended nature draws many toward mindful, holistic habits that gently ease everyday stress.
Writers Theatre built its name in Glencoe on small rooms and close staging, and the Green Bay Trail carries walkers through the village. Attention of that kind is worth keeping. Distance Reiki wants that same attention, one quiet hour given over to it, with nothing competing for the room.
Walter Gurnee, a former mayor of Chicago who became president of the railroad running between Chicago and Milwaukee, bought this land in 1867 and began subdividing it, and the village incorporated in 1869. The Chicago Botanic Garden sits at the upper northwest corner of the village, technically just outside the village line, and the Writers Theatre building was designed by Jeanne Gang. Beyond the 1867 purchase and the 1869 incorporation the dated record for this village is thin, and this page carries what can be shown rather than filling the gap.
