Winnetka sits along the Lake Michigan shoreline north of Chicago, with tree-canopied streets, lakefront beaches, and the historic Village Green. Its calm, established neighborhoods pair naturally with mindful, holistic practices that support a settled and grounded inner life.
Crow Island School opened in 1940 built to a child's scale, low windows and workrooms rather than long corridors, and architects still travel to see it. A room arranged around the person in it changes what happens there. A distance session works the same way, held in your own space at an hour you set.
The name is thought to be Potawatomi for beautiful place. The first houses went up in 1836 and the village incorporated in 1869 with four hundred and fifty people. Its lasting contribution is educational: the Winnetka Plan built the schools around creative work and social development rather than recitation, and Crow Island School, designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen with Perkins, Wheeler and Will and opened in 1938 to ten thousand visitors, was made a National Historic Landmark in 1990 as the building that changed how American schools were designed. The house at 671 Lincoln Avenue, built in the 1920s, was filmed from 1990.
